Well, it turned out to be rather lucky that I hadn't packed yet or it would have been mighty depressing unpacking again. Last Tuesday I was having trouble breathing after walking up one flight of stairs. Now, I'm out of shape, but not THAT out of shape. After finding it difficult to walk across the parking lot to work, I decided to take the day off and take a nap. 8 hours later and still having problems I was forced to go to the clinic (literally forced, I wanted to sleep it off) where tests, etc, 3 infiltrated IVs later, bam! I've got blood clots and I'm in the ICU for 3 days.
Up until Saturday I was still determined to get on the plane to Sacramento when I experienced crippling pain in my chest and went to the ER where all they could do was give me pain meds. I am no masochist so I decided trying to recover and train for projects would probably not be a good time. Thankfully, NCCC understood and transferred me the winter cycle when I will now be serving in Perry Point, MD. I was really looking forward to Sacramento because I've never been further west than South Dakota, but at least I still get to serve! Waiting 3 more months is not going to be as easy though...maybe this time I'll prepare a little more? ha! yeah, I didn't think so either. But good luck to all of those leaving tomorrow!! Enjoy the weather!

Begin the countdown: 9 days
Alright, I got my flight information a couple of days ago and I have finally reached the point of boredom that requires a countdown. In 9 days I fly to Sacramento, California to begin my 10 months of volunteer service in the AmeriCorps NCCC program. I have not packed, I have not gone shopping for the necessaries, I have not been working out to get ready for physical training (5 days a week at 5:30am...), and in general have not prepared in any way. That's not my style--hence the title, The Lazy Volunteer. In fact, I'm a little shocked that I felt such a strong desire to start such a labor intensive venture as a blog, but I'm not one to deny my impulses so here it is! Let us hope I feel as strong a desire to actually keep it up to date.
To answer the question I've been asked a few times too many, I don't know exactly what I'll be doing but www.americorps.gov/ could probably answer any questions that I'm tired of answering or simply don't know yet. But that is the reason why I picked this program, a variety of projects in a variety of places, and the best part is that we don't know until a couple weeks before. I like not knowing, I like having to adapt instantly, and I love the potential for near constant change of scenery. By the time I am comfortable in a place it will be time to leave which is perfect because to me 'comfortable' gives way to boredom fairly quickly.
So there's a short and not very informative introduction to this blog. Next time I'll attempt to summarize my background and reasons for joining this program, but for now, I've simply lost the energy. (Once more refer to blog title...)
